Ovarian Cancer Patient Win $110M in Talcum Powder Lawsuit

The latest lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson has resulted in a $110 million verdict in favor of the plaintiff, a 62-year-old Virginia woman who claimed that the company failed to disclose the possibility that its talcum powder products may cause ovarian cancer. It took the 12-person jury 10 hours to deliver the verdict in favor of the plaintiff, who was first diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2012.

This is yet another major blow to the health products giant, which has lost similar cases resulting in verdicts of $55 million, $70 million, and $72 million. Johnson & Johnson is also facing a number of federal class action lawsuits for neglecting to properly warn consumers of the cancer risk associated with female genital use. Amidst all allegations and verdicts against the company, Johnson & Johnson still continues to deny that there is any link between its products and cancer and plans to appeal the verdict.

For those unfamiliar with the dangers of talcum powder, here is a summary of what you should know:

  • Talc, a naturally-occurring mineral, is an ingredient in Johnson & Johnson brand Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower powder (a former Johnson & Johnson product now owned by another manufacturer)
  • When used on the genitals for feminine hygiene, talc can enter and accumulate in the body, and over time can lead to the formation of cancerous tumors
  • Although research from the past three decades has indicated that talc can increase a woman’s risk of ovarian cancer, Johnson & Johnson has refused to add a warning label on its product
  • Women who use Baby Powder or Shower to Shower powder for feminine hygiene are advised to discontinue use and consult a doctor
